Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is a tragic choice. Driving intoxicated results in deaths and serious injuries to innocent people and also creates a pervasive fear among drivers who are aware of this widespread problem. For this reason, municipalities are funding apps against drunk driving to reduce the occurrence of this terrible scenario. Here are two types of apps that organizations are hoping to make more prevalant among drivers.
Blood Alcohol Concentration Calculators
This type of app estimates a person’s blood alcohol content (BAC) to determine whether he or she is sober enough to drive. This can be highly problematic, however, because it relies on the judgment of someone who has already consumed alcohol. He or she might have a hard time remembering how many drinks he or she has consumed.
Scientific Measurement of BAC
This type of app uses a smartphone’s camera to scan the user’s eyes for horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN), which is an involuntary movement of the eyes which occurs when someone is under the influence of alcohol. This type of app is much more reliable than other types of apps and can effectively measure BAC using technology.
The more municipalities that fund anti-drunk driving apps, the better the quality of available apps. Hopefully more high-quality apps will be available soon.
